Description

We have up to two fully-funded and highly remunerated PhD positions available at the School of Computer Science and Engineering, University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney, Australia. The positions are funded by the prestigious UNSW Scientia PhD program to attract highly talented and motivated students from anywhere in the world.
Successful candidates will work on the project “Device-free Behavioural Analytics using WiFi Signals” starting in 2019 under the guidance of a supervisory team comprising Prof. Mahbub Hassan and Dr. Wen Hu from CSE and Prof. Aruna Seneviratne from EET.
Remuneration Package (Tax-free)
- Full tuition waiver
- Living stipend (AUD 40K p.a. for four years)
- Carrier development: e.g., visits to prestigious labs, etc. (AUD 10K p.a. for 4 years)
There is additional travel allowance for conference presentations supported by the School of Computer Science and Engineering.
There is also opportunity to work as tutors and lab instructors as paid job for limited hours.
Project Description:
Device-free Behavioural Analytics using WiFi Signals
By reflecting WiFi signals, human activities introduce discernible changes in the radio signals received by nearby WiFi access points. This project will develop signal processing and machine learning techniques to detect human behaviour in shopping malls, airports, and museums, by analysing large volume of radio signals pervasively available from in-situ WiFi infrastructure. The analytics will answer questions like: where the people spent most of the time, how many people are waiting in the queue, what activities are performed by the people and so on, which will empower the business owners to improve productivity and customer satisfaction.
Selection Criteria:
The applicant should be highly motivated and have the following technical skills and experiences: (i) 4-year Bachelor or preferably a Master’s degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering, (ii) Good knowledge of WiFi networks, (iii) Basic knowledge of signal processing techniques and machine learning algorithms, (iv) high level of mathematical skills with practical experience in using MATLAB, (v) Excellent communication skills.
Applicants with high academic achievements and unique research and other experiences in related areas will be considered favourably.
Deadline for contacting supervisor is 20 July 2018 via the following link:
