The IDLab research group of imec performs fundamental and applied research on internet technologies and data science. IDLab is a joint research initiative between the University of Antwerp and Ghent University. The overall IDLab research areas are machine learning and data mining; semantic intelligence; distributed intelligence for IoT; cloud and big data infrastructures; multimedia coding and delivery; wireless and fixed networking; electromagnetics, RF and high-speed circuits and systems. Within Antwerp, IDLab specifically focuses on wireless networking (in collaboration with Ghent), distributed embedded systems and stochastic modelling. IDLab has a unique research infrastructure used in numerous national and international collaborations.
For further development of the IDLab wireless research cluster, we are looking for a post-doctoral researcher in the broad domain of wireless communications and networking for Internet of Things. Concretely, the research will focus on the design of networking solutions (focusing on the data link and network layer) for emerging IoT technologies and applications, such as battery-less communications and Terahertz-band or molecular nano networks.
Job description
You will conduct research on the performance (e.g., scalability, energy efficiency) of data link (e.g., scheduling) and network (e.g., routing) layer protocols for emerging wireless IoT networks. This work includes theoretical performance modelling (e.g., Markov models, queueing), as well as experimental research (using simulation tools and hardware prototypes). You will work with emerging wireless technologies, such as battery-less communications (e.g., energy harvesting, passive radio, backscatter, synchronization-less protocols) and nanoscale communications (e.g., Terahertz or molecular communications).
You will be responsible for the daily supervision of PhD and master students that perform research on this topic.
You will participate in and help manage national and European research projects (both in collaboration with industry and fundamental). Some example projects our team is currently working on include IDEAL-IoT, CONAMO and MuSCLe-IoT.
You will publish and present your work both at international conferences and in scientific journals with high impact.
You will assist in writing research grants for various national and European funding agencies (e.g., H2020, ESA, imec ICON, FWO).
Profile and requirements
You have (or will receive within the next few months) a PhD degree in Computer Science, Electrical or Telecommunications Engineering, Informatics or equivalent.
You have published in high-impact conferences and journals in the broad field of wireless communications and networking.
You are a team player and have strong communication skills.
You are fluent in English, both spoken and written.
Having experience with managing and supervising team members is a plus.
A track record in participating in national and/or European research projects is a plus.

Employment: temporary assignment for 12 months with possible extension based on performance and availability of funding
