The DMIR Research Group is a highly interdisciplinary group of researchers led by Prof. Andreas Hotho focusing on novel methods in the areas of machine learning and artificial intelligence. We are mainly focusing on natural language processing and the semantic web but also work on projects aimed at modeling and predicting environmental aspects. # Job description
The DMIR group at the University of Würzburg is looking for a highly motivated candidate to join the DMIR Research group to develop and research novel methods at the intersection of natural language processing and machine learning. The goal is to solve tasks arising in a broad range of areas starting from digital humanities over semantic web to social media together with computational linguists, social or literature scientists, and physicists.
The tasks connected with the position are the following:
* Perform fundamental and applied research in the areas of NLP and ML
* Actively participate in the research activities of the "Data Mining and Information Retrieval" (DMIR) group
* Organize research with a highly motivated team of Ph.D. students
* Actively contribute to the design and initiation of new research projects and ideas
* Present research results at top international workshops and conferences, exhibits, and project meetings
* Co-author articles for publication in leading peer-reviewed journals and top conferences

# Requirements
The ideal candidate has a Ph.D. in Machine Learning, Data Mining or related areas with focus on natural language processing, computational linguistics or a closely-related field. The ability of approaching research problems with a system view, of working in a multidisciplinary team environment, problem solving skills and high creativity are very welcome. The following aspects are important factors:
* Proven ability to develop research independently
* Willingness to share expertise and learn from others
* A strong publication record
* Advanced to strong oral and written English skills are expected and German is a strong plus
* Experience in various fields of machine learning, data mining and related areas are expected
* Experience in natural language processing tasks and related areas are excepted
* Experience in applying and developing neural networks is a strong plus
# Conditions
The position is a limited-term contract from the earliest possible date. Maximum runtime is 6 years after Ph.D. Salary is based on TVL. There is the typical teaching load associated with this position. The possibility for habilitation is given. Please note that we will support you in the acquisition of projects and/or third-party funding.
