Description of the unit hosting the position:
The postdoc position will be hosted at the Laboratory of Signal Processing, where research is conducted in research groups, led by award-winning and experienced professors. The main focus is on basic research and applied research in collaborate with many large companies and SMEs. Research work is conducted by experienced doctors (post-docs), doctoral students. The research fields span three fundamental levels of signal and data processing: 1) Data Acquisition (sensors, measurements and data annotation), 2) Data Representation, Modelling and Processing and 3) Data Analysis and Visualization (Display and Rendering). The Laboratory has particularly strong research in the fields of Vision, Audio Processing and Analysis, Displays and 3D Rendering, and several application fields of Industry, Defence, Media and Medical Signals.

Job description:
The Postdoctoral Researcher will perform research within the Research Community “Data-to-Decision – A large scale data approach”. Data-to-Decision (D2D) is a newly created multi-disciplinary research community whose aim is to develop new theories, methods, and algorithms for data representation, data analysis and machine learning by fundamentally up-scaling existing theories and models and proposing new ones for massive data in order to develop solutions to pertinent problems and applications with high impact, such as biomedical and health; public transportation and traffic; finance; safety and security; as well as audio-visual media.
The job includes development of theories, methods, and algorithms for data representation, data analysis and machine learning within the realm of deep learning-enabled artificial intelligence. These include:
- scalable Big Data computations
- machine learning and deep learning algorithms

- artificial intelligence enabled decision-making systems
- application areas include and are not limited to wellbeing and healthcare, security and surveillance, media, intelligent building.
The work includes research collaboration with D2D partners at the University of Tampere.
Requirements:
The successful candidate must hold a doctoral degree from a related discipline, for example Signal Processing, Machine Learning, Computer Science, Neuroinformatics, Mathematics or Artificial Intelligence. Experience in signal processing, computer vision, pattern recognition and visualization is appreciated. Fluent written and spoken English and solid programming skills (Python, C/C++, and Matlab) are appreciated.
The successful candidate should possess the competence to pursue independent scientific work to perform the duties of the position. Experience of studying and working abroad and international research network will be appreciated.
We offer:
The position will be in the Multimedia Research Group that does pioneering research related to signal processing, big data, machine learning, and pattern recognition.
Salary:
The salary will be based on both the job demands and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the University Salary System. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a Postdoctoral Researcher is placed on the job demands levels 5-6. In addition, employees receive performance based salary. Typical starting salary for Postdoctoral Researcher is 3100-4100 EUR/month depending on the researcher's experience.
Trial period:
The appointment is subject to the satisfactory completion of a trial period of four months.
Other:
The position will be filled for a fixed term period two years. The commencement date will be March 2018 or sooner.
