Project Vision
---
The area of the two positions lies at the intersection of computer programming, distributed systems and machine learning. A major expected outcome of the doctoral research is to provide system support for continuous deep analytics: a radical new approach for data analysis that builds on recent advances in large-scale machine learning and data stream processing to produce interpretable models of the world. The doctoral students for these positions can choose which direction to pursue further, these include but are not limited to: programming language or intermediate representation design for continuous data analysis; modelling and developing state-of-the-art distributed runtimes for continuous processing; and algorithms for machine learning and analytics on streaming data and graphs.
Research Team
---
This research project is led by Seif Haridi and Christian Schulte, professors at the department of Software and Computer Systems, School of Information and Communication Technology, KTH Royal Institute of Technology and is financed by a prestigious grant from the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF). Alongside individual work, the project aims to build a world-class team of senior and junior researchers with doctoral students being an integral part of the team. The research group has a long tradition of exceptionally skilled doctoral students who continue making high societal impact today such as Ali Ghodsi (current CEO of Databricks, Apache Spark and Mesos co-creator) and Cosmin Arad (senior engineer on Google Compute Engine) as well as committers and PMCs to popular open source systems such as Apache Flink (Vasiliki Kalavri, Paris Carbone and Theodore Vasiloudis) and Gecode (Christian Schulte, Guido Tack).
Activities and Responsibilities
---
The positions are for five years where 80% of the time is typically spent on doctoral studies and up to 20% on departmental duties which normally amount to involvement in teaching and supervision. Doctoral student employment at KTH offers excellent conditions with competitive salaries, health care, social security, and contributions to pension funds.
Qualifications
---
The applicants should hold a Master of Science degree or a degree that fulfills the entry requirements for doctoral education at KTH. The ideal candidate has a degree in computer science, information technology or engineering with a relevant specialization such as distributed systems, programming languages or machine learning.
The selected candidates are expected to have a strong background and passionate interest in topics of at least one of the following fields:
* Data Management : database systems, data representations, data stream analysis, statistical models, machine learning, relational algebra and query optimisation.
* Programming Systems: compilers, types and programming language semantics, dataflow programming, constraint programming, intermediate representations (e.g., LLVM) and programming on specialized hardware such as GPUs or TPUs.
* Machine Learning: online learning, uncertainty estimation, interpretable models, gradient-based optimization, statistical learning, Bayesian statistics, graph mining.
* Distributed Systems: distributed algorithms, scalable storage, formal specification of distributed systems (e.g., TLA+) and transactions.
Practical problem solving skills and creativity are of utmost importance. Applicants must be strongly motivated for doctoral studies; should possess the ability to work independently, perform critical analysis but also working within a team, exhibiting excellent levels of cooperative and communicative skills.
Our group offers a friendly working environment and the main language used is English. Stockholm and Sweden routinely score at the absolute top in rankings of quality of life and Stockholm has one of the most vibrant IT sectors in Europe.
