Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Robot Learning for Action and Interaction

Country/Region : UK - United Kingdom

Website : http://www.ox.ac.uk/about/jobs/preemploy...

Description

We are seeking exceptional candidates for a full-time Postdoctoral Research Assistant to join the Applied Artificial Intelligence Lab (A2I) at the Oxford Robotics Institute (ORI) in the Department of Engineering Science (central Oxford). The post is funded by EPSRC (fixed-term to 28 February 2020 in the first instance).
The A2I explores core challenges in AI and Machine Learning to enable robots to robustly and effectively operate in complex, real-world environments. This role will focus on robot learning for, amongst others, real-world manipulation tasks. This position will feed into the science effort of an EPSRC Programme Grant, specifically in the context of machine perception as well as robot learning for action and interaction.
The successful candidate will be responsible for researching and developing state-of-the-art algorithms and techniques required to execute the project aims. A key responsibility (and opportunity) lies in the remit to extend the platform reach of the A2I (and ORI) through leadership in the lab’s budding learning for manipulation thread.
You should possess a PhD (or be near completion) in a relevant discipline (e.g. machine learning for manipulation and/or robotics, learning from demonstration, reinforcement learning, etc.), a strong publication record in the primary field of research and familiarity with the existing literature and research in the field, as well as proven software writing and debugging skills in Python and/or C++ and expertise in Linux. A strong background in machine learning theory and deep learning is desirable as well as expertise in (inverse) reinforcement learning and GPU programming.
Informal enquiries may be addressed to Professor Ingmar Posner using the email address below.
Further information can be found at http://ori.ox.ac.uk/a2i/
You will be required to upload a covering letter/supporting statement, including a brief statement of research interests (describing how past experience and future plans fit with the advertised position), CV and the details of two referees as part of your online application.
Only applications received before 12.00 midday on 24 November 2017 can be considered.
The Department holds an Athena Swan Bronze award, highlighting its commitment to promoting women in Science, Engineering and Technology.
Please note that the University of Oxford's retirement policy has changed. With effect from 1 October 2017, all employees at Grade 8 and above have a retirement age of the 30 September before the 69th birthday. All employees at Grades 1-7 do not have a set retirement age. Further details are available here: www.ox.ac.uk/about/jobs/preemploymentscreening.
