The Concord Consortium, a nonprofit research and development organization dedicated to transforming STEM education through technology, is looking for a Postdoctoral Researcher specializing in mathematics education, computer science education, instructional technology, and design-based research in high school classrooms. The Postdoctoral Researcher will work in our Concord, Massachusetts, office with senior research personnel to conduct design-based research on technological solutions to integrate computational thinking into high school math classrooms. We’re looking for a team player who is excited to work in a stimulating, technology-rich environment to help make a difference in education.
This position will mainly involve working on a recently funded multi-year research project called Computing with R for Mathematical Modeling or simply CodeR4MATH. The project will create a robust infrastructure to support the infusion of computational thinking into high school math classrooms. To achieve this goal, the project will 1) curate a collection of R-based tools and evaluate their pedagogical affordances; 2) create the CodeR4MATH online learning platform to provide wide access to the computing resources, learning resources, and teacher supports; 3) develop, implement, and iteratively improve three curriculum modules that integrate computational thinking practices into Common Core mathematics standards; 4) conduct research on student learning through the curriculum modules; 5) disseminate project products and research findings at major research conferences and in peer-reviewed educational research journals.
Responsibilities
Conduct literature review, theory building, and research design
Develop research instruments including knowledge assessments, performance rubrics, questionnaires, observation and interview protocols, and learning analytics
Collect, process, and analyze student and teacher data to test and improve theoretical models as well as inform technology and curriculum development
Publish research findings in academic and practitioner publication venues
Plan and conduct teacher professional development activities including in-person workshops, webinars, and on-site coaching
Be willing to drive or commute to research sites in the greater Boston area
Qualifications
Ph.D. in mathematics education, computer science education, instructional technology, or learning science
Undergraduate degree or beyond in mathematics and/or computer science
Experience in conducting design-based research in authentic classroom settings
Experience in publishing in research and practitioner journals and conferences
Fluency in R and RStudio
Experience working with high school students
Team player, willing to pitch in and do what needs to be done
This is a grant-funded, 100% FTE position. The successful candidate will be required to work on site in Concord, MA, and must be authorized to work in the United States.
