Postdoctoral Positon | Data Science Institute, Columbia University

Country/Region : UK - United Kingdom

Website : http://columbia.edu

Description

Postdoctoral opening at Columbia University's Data Science Institute (New York, NY). The Data Science Institute at Columbia University is a world-leading institution in research and education in the theory and practice of the emerging field of data science. The Data Science Institute’s mission involves advancing the state of the art in data science; transforming all fields, professions, and sectors through the application of data science, while ensuring the responsible use of data for the benefit of society.
The Data Science Institute (DSI) is seeking a highly qualified postdoctoral scholar to work with faculty members as part of a new cross-disciplinary effort aimed at articulating theoretical foundations for data science, through a program of research, education and center building. The postdoc will work primarily with the PIs (see below) to lead these activities, and will also be encouraged to develop an independent program of research and collaborate with other faculty and students at DSI.
Some specific research directions at the center include understanding tractable classes of optimization problems, developing primitives that support efficient computation on data, and developing methodological foundations for interactive protocols in data science. These directions address challenging problems at the interface between theory and practice, the solutions of which require ideas spanning mathematics, statistics, and computing.
The initial term of this appointment will be for one year, and the start date will be on a mutually agreed upon date in Fall 2017. The appointment is renewable for up to a total period of three years, subject to the usual standards for satisfactory performance, availability of funding and continued visa clearance (if applicable). Our expectation is for the appointment to be for at least two years.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in theoretical computer science, statistics, mathematics, or other related fields.
To apply, send your CV and arrange for two letters of reference to be sent to DSI-Tripods-AT-columbia.edu.
Affiliated PIs:
Alexandr Andoni (computer science)
David Blei (computer science and statistics)
Qiang Du (applied math)
Daniel Hsu (computer science)
John Wright (electrical engineering)
