The Institute of Computer Science of University of Tartu (Estonia) invites applications from outstanding researchers for a full-time permanent position of Lead Research Fellow of Big Data. In the Estonian system, the position of Lead Research Fellow is a professorial position with low teaching load and high research leadership expectations, best described as a equivalent to a Research Professor in other systems.
Candidates are expected to have a PhD in Computer Science or a related field and an outstanding research track record in the area of Big Data broadly interpreted, including data mining, distributed machine learning and/or large-scale data processing.
The duties of a Lead Research Fellow at University of Tartu include attracting and implementing ambitious research projects, developing relations with international and industrial partners, PhD student supervision, and graduate teaching - two contact hours per week primarily aimed at inspiring graduate students to engage in research.
The successful candidate will create a new research group in their field of specialization. They will receive generous seed funding and will be able and encouraged to appoint PhD students on state-funded study places. Access to research funding will be initially ensured via the Estonian Centre of Excellence in ICT (EXCITE) and the Estonian Doctoral School in ICT, and subsequently via national and European research projects. Besides access to EU funding instruments, Estonia has a merit-based national research funding system that enables high-performing scholars to create sustainable research groups.
University of Tartu is the leading higher education and research centre in Estonia, with over 15000 students and 1800 academic staff. It is also the highest ranked university in the Baltic States according to both the Times Higher Education and the QS World University rankings. University of Tartu's Institute of Computer Science hosts 800 Bachelors and Masters students, over 80 academic staff members, and 60 doctoral students. The institute has a strong international orientation: over 40% of graduate students and a quarter of academic and research staff members are international. Graduate teaching in the institute is in English.
The appointment will be permanent with an initial salary of up to 5000 euros per month depending on experience and achievements. Estonia applies a flat income tax of 20% on salaries and provides public health insurance for employees. Other benefits include 42 days of annual leave and relocation support if applicable.
