The Crisis Computing team under QCRI's Social Computing Group has an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research and develop creative solutions for real world problems in the humanitarian domain. We are seeking candidates with expertise in machine learning and computer vision, as well as strong system development in Java. Pre-knowledge and practical experience in object detection, scene recognition, deep learning, and understanding social media images is a strong advantage. Additional experience in natural language processing and text mining is also a big plus for joint analysis of multimodal social media data.
Project Description:
The Crisis Computing team works on social media data analysis tasks such as text and image classification, information extraction and summarization to solve problems in the humanitarian domain and beyond. Successful applicants will work on one of QCRI's flagship projects called Artificial Intelligence for Digital Response (AIDR, http://aidr.qcri.org/). AIDR combines human computation and machine learning techniques to process social media data (both textual and visual) in real-time for crisis response and management. AIDR has been developed in partnership with United Nations OCHA and has been used during a number of major natural disasters since 2013.
Job Summary:
Successful candidate will be researching, designing, and developing novel computational models, algorithms, and innovative applications to process social media data to solve real world problems, such as damage assessment, needs assessment, etc.
Requirements:
- PhD in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field
- Strong knowledge of machine learning, computer vision, deep learning, and/or natural language processing
- Strong record of major accomplishments and publications
- Must be highly proficient in Java (SE , EE), experience in Python is a plus
- Ability to think creatively, to work collaboratively, and to take ownership of projects
- Excellent spoken and written English skills; and good presentation, communication skills
