Open Ph.D. position at Eurecom: Slicing in 5G-NR (gNB) access layer
Country/Region : France
Website : https://5g-ppp.eu
Description
Description : The successful candidate will conduct both academic and experimental system research toward the future 5G-NR (gNB) access layer and their interworking with the evolved LTE (eLTE) and next generation service-oriented core networks (NG-CN) [1][2]. In particular, we will be focusing on the flow-based QoS management at the access layer (newly introduced SDAP layer[1]), data-flow aggregation, connectionless channel access, radio resource allocation and management algorithms and polices. Four network slice categories with different QoS requirements will be considered when designing the above methods and algorithms, namely xMBB, uRLLC, mMTC, and best-effort. In addition, we will be studying a slice-aware MAC scheduling and resource allocation that takes into account different numerologies and sharing models (UL, and potentially DL between eLTE and 5G-NR) considering different network slices.
We plan to evaluate the performance of the envisioned methods/algorithms both in Matlab and in the OpenAirInterface (OAI) software defined radio platform. Experimentation and validation will done through emulation and real experimentations in a small scale deployment at Eurecom open5G Lab (a living testbed).

[2] 3GPP TS 37.340
Context: The research work will be carried out in the framework of the 5GPPP European collaborative projects (https://5g-ppp.eu/ phase 2), with strong industrial partners as well as a number of world-class universities. It is funded by the European Commission under the H2020 Framework Programme. The candidate will actively participate to the progress of the projects.
Essential experience for the interested applicants:
- Hold a Master degree or equivalent in Computer Science or Computer Engineering or a closely related area,
- Have understanding of current technology landscape 5G-NR, eLTE, Network slicing, and SDN/MEC/NFV,
- Good Knowledge of radio resource allocation and management (spectrum management/sharing will be a plus),
- Solid Matlab and C/Python programming skills,
- Excellent analytical skills and performance evaluation methodology,
- Demonstrate an excellent level of spoken and written English.
Applications should be sent to:
Prof. Navid Nikaein, navid.nikaein-AT-eurecom.fr
and must include the following information:
- A curriculum vitae, with full contact information, education, positions and academic work,
- A cover letter explaining the candidate's background (relevant publications), qualifications and research interests,
- Copies of relevant diplomas / degree certificates, transcripts of records,
- Copies of at least 2 recommendation letters.
