Post-doctoral positions in Machine Learning and Statistical Signal Processing for Gravitational Wave Astronomy

Country/Region : France

Website : http://www.apc.univ-paris7.fr

Description

The Gravitation group at AstroParticule & Cosmologie APC is seeking qualified individuals with expertise in machine learning and statistical signal processing for post-doctoral appointments in order to develop new data analysis methodologies for gravitational-wave astronomy.
Context
On September 14 2015, the two detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory observed for the first time a gravitational-wave signal produced by a distant binary black-hole merger. This is a major discovery that opens a new era for astronomy that will develop during the coming years with new instruments such as Advanced Virgo joining the worldwide detector network. Gravitational-wave astronomy heavily relies on a range of data analysis techniques that we intend to develop and improve.
The institute
APC is an institute funded by the French National Research Center CNRS and the University of Paris Diderot. The institute is located in Paris, France and it is devoted to astroparticle physics and cosmology. It is involved in many large experiments and observatories in those areas such as the Planck CMB mission, the LSST survey telescope, ESA Euclid survey mission, the KM3NeT neutrino telescope, the SVOM gamma-ray satellite, etc. The institute provides a friendly and lively place to work and a scientifically exciting and stimulating environment to conduct research in.

The position
The position is for one year, renewable by one more year. The candidate will be employed by CNRS and will obtain the status of postdoctoral researcher.
So far, machine learning methods have received limited consideration in the area of gravitational-wave astronomy. They could provide efficient tools for the characterization and rejection of the complex transient background noise in gravitational-wave data, and thus have a significant impact on the science reach. The candidate will join an interdisplinary working group of researchers including Aurelia Fraysse LSS/CentraleSupelec and Stéphane Jaffard UPEC.
The candidate will also interact with the Virgo team at APC, currently composed of three permanent researchers, two postdoctoral fellows and three PhD students. The candidate will join the lively world-wide community formed by the Virgo and LIGO Scientific Collaborations (> 1000 members). The candidate will have the opportunity to contribute directly to the analysis of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo data.
