Q&A about the IST Austria PhD Program:
* What is the format of the PhD program at IST Austria?
The PhD program at IST Austria is unique within Europe. From day
one as a PhD student, you will be immersed in an interdisciplinary
training environment, where bridges are built across disciplines
in courses and rotations. We have research groups in computer science, mathematics, cell & developmental biology, evolutionary biology,
neuroscience, and physics. At the time of application you do not
have to commit to a particular research topic or research group,
but this assignment can be made after an initial phase of exploration.
This ensures that the research group and PhD project you will end up in
is the right fit for you.
* Will I need to learn German?
No, IST Austria is a fully English-speaking institution. This
includes not only the PhD program, but also all administrative
matters, etc.
* Will I get paid to do my PhD?
Yes. All our PhD students receive a competitive salary and full
social security benefits.
* Can I apply as a bachelor’s student?
Yes, you can apply if you have a bachelor’s degree in a science
subject by the time you start your PhD. If you plan to apply to
join IST Austria in September 2016, you will need to have obtained
your bachelor’s certificate by then.
* How is the PhD program structured?
The PhD program has two phases. Phase I takes 1 to 2 years, depending
on whether one enters the program with a BSc or MSc degree. It consists
of courses and research projects with at least three different research
groups. At the end of Phase 1, students affiliate with a research group
of their choice, and pass a Qualifying Exam to enter the second Phase
of the program. Phase II consists of 3 to 4 years of research under
close supervision of the group leader. At the end of Phase 2 students
pass a public defense and are awarded their PhD degrees.
