Description of the Work:
Machine Learning has many applications in the field of Defense and Security. These include applications in environmental safety, maritime security, cyber security, and many more. The purpose of this postdoctoral fellowship will be to develop and apply machine learning/data mining/big data analysis tools to the field.
The ideal candidate will hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science and more specifically, in the area of Machine Learning, have prior experience in defense and security applications or in domains that use tools similar to those required in defense and security applications. The candidate must have an interest in a variety of machine learning techniques such as one-class learning or outlier detection, approaches to deal with the class imbalance problem, big data analysis tools such as Spark, and data stream learning techniques.
The principal duties to be carried out include:
? Leading a group of student in carrying in out a pilot project from data
gathering to result analysis.
? Assist in preparing a grant proposal for DARPA, ONR or other appropriate
agency based on the pilot study.
? Assist in manuscript preparation.
? Assist in carrying out side studies on related projects.
Location
The successful candidate will be affiliated with the Department of Computer Science at American University in Washington, DC. He or she will be working with Professor Nathalie Japkowicz and participate in the creation of a Defense and Security Research Laboratory (go to http://www.site.uottawa.ca/~nat/ML-DeSec-Webpage.h... to see a description of the Laboratory Dr. Japkowicz previously led at the University of Ottawa).
Length
The appointment is a 12-month term position (renewable for 6 months) and will commence on January 1, 2017.
