Doctoral Candidate in Software Defined Radio for 5G

The Department of Communications and Networking (COMNET) at the Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering is seeking to hire an outstanding individual with a MSc (or equivalent) for conducting research, as part of doctoral studies, on software defined radio. In particular the research focus would be on implementation aspects and experimentation of 5th generation mobile communication systems. Optional research topics include cloud based radio access networks, ultra-dense networks, and machine-type-communications. The position is full-time. It will be initially filled for one year, with possible contract extension up to three more years, subject to performance evaluation.
The position will be placed in the TEKES funded TAKE-5 project or related EIT Digital activities. Promising higher speeds and extreme reliability, 5G will be launched by the turn of the next decade, with a majority of its development being done in the next few years. TAKE-5G project gathers the major industry players, SMEs and research institutions to work in following areas to design and prototype in several pilots the future 5G networks. The successful candidate will join a research team building experimental radio access network platforms lead by Dr. Kalle Ruttik (kalle.ruttik-AT-aalto.fi).
REQUIREMENTS
The eligible candidate should have:
? master’s degree (or equivalence) in electrical engineering, communications engineering, computer science, or in a related study with excellent results
? good programming skills (C and C++)
? good mathematical skills
? familiarity with Linux operation system
? familiarity with modern mobile communication systems (LTE)
? familiarity with signal processing methods for communications (physical layer)
? experience using measurement equipment
? high motivation for research
? good organization skills
? rigorous thinking
? ability to work independently
? previous experience with software defined radio or radio amateur hobby considered as a plus
? previous scientific publications are considered a plus
? good written and oral communication skills in English and motivation to work in an international and cross-disciplinary team.
SALARY AND CONTRACT TERMS
The expected starting salary is 2,400 ?/month, and it will increase with performance over time. The contract includes occupational health and social security benefits.
