Research Assistant in Web Services for IoT at Dhofar University
Country/Region : Oman
Website : https://www.du.edu.om
Description
The project aims at the design and development of a large-scale and interoperable architecture of heterogeneous networks and applications for intelligent (monitoring) systems using 6LowPAN as the core sensing and communication protocol. One of the main tasks of this work is the incorporation of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) with IoT to realize the notion of Internet of Services (IoS). Service-oriented architecture suits particularly well in this scenario since it helps development of the ‘things’ as services, simple or complex. The main challenges to be tackled in the project include heterogeneity, service transparency, scalability, intelligent prediction, and context awareness.
Responsibilities
? Design and implement Intelligent Monitoring Scenarios using 6LoWPAN and other WSN platforms.
? Perform simulation and performance evaluation of various monitoring scenarios.
? Implement prototypes of the required intelligent applications in accordance with 6-IMS requirements.
? Write and publish articles in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
Requirements
? A Masters degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
? Research expertise in some of the following areas: Intelligent monitoring using sensor networks, RFID, wireless and mobile ad hoc networks, smart space development, simulation and performance evaluation.
? Hands-on experience in WSN development and simulation technologies, e.g., TinyOS, real-time OS, ns2, and Qualnet.
? Strong problem solving and programming skills.
? Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Apart from the technical skills, it is essential that the candidate has a strong motivation, can work with autonomy, is an effective player, and open to collaborate with others.

Workplace - Dhofar University, Salalah, Oman
Dhofar University (DU) is a private, not-for-profit institution of higher education in Salalah, Sultanate of Oman, established in January 2004. DU is a young university where campus life is brimming with social and cultural events that reflect the rich heritage of Oman and that of Dhofar (art exhibits, performances, poetry readings, environmental awareness presentations, etc). The university offers a variety of Undergrad and Master Programs and has a student enrollment of about 5500. More information about the University can be found at http://www.du.edu.om/.
The university is located in the beautiful city of Salalah, which is the second largest city of Oman. Salalah’s coconut-fringed beaches, frankincense, rich tradition, and mild weather (compared to the rest of Middle East) make living in Salalah a wonderful experience for expats and visitors. During summer (mid-June to mid-August) monsoon season causes a constant drizzle to the area transforming Salalah into beautiful lush green landscape.
