Aalto University and the University of Helsinki, the two leading universities in Finland within computer science and information technology, are looking for several researchers in Computer Science in the following areas:
1. Complex Systems Computation
2. Bioinformatics of DNA sequencing and gene regulation
3. Communication and Complexity Constrained Machine Learning for Big Data
4. Data mining (2 different open positions)
5. Probabilistic Machine Learning
6. Inference on intractable models and interactive intent modelling
7. Augmented research

Post docs are sought for fixed-term periods of at most three years and research fellows at most five years. Starting and ending dates can be negotiated.
Why Helsinki?
The Helsinki metropolitan region is a leading hub of computer science and information technology. The two collaborating universities employ close to 60 professors and over 200 graduate students in these areas and graduate more than 40 new doctors in CS and ICT each year.

Responsibilities
In addition to research work, the person hired is expected to participate in the supervision of students and teaching related to his or her research topic.
Qualifications
Applicants are expected to have an excellent track record in scientific research in one or several fields of computer science. Good command of English is a necessary prerequisite.
Post docs must have completed their PhD degree, but negotiations can naturally be started earlier. Exceptionally, an early contract can be made with a different title. Research Fellows must have completed a postdoc period with excellent performance. Successful candidates for the Research Fellow positions are expected to have substantial postdoctoral experience from outside of the departments participating in the call.
Compensation and place of work
The starting salary for the postdoc position ranges from 3 200 to 3 600 euros per month, and for research fellows from 3 790 to 4 200 euros per month, both depending on experience and qualifications. In addition to the salary, the contract includes occupational health benefits. The positions are located at the Aalto University Otaniemi campus or at the University of Helsinki Kumpula campus.

An application letter addressed to the Dean of the School of Science at Aalto University, indicating “Post doc or Research Fellow position in computer science in Helsinki, Finland” and which includes at least the contact information of the applicant and the names and contact information of two senior academics available for reference per e-mail.
A research statement of at most three pages outlining planned research work, explaining how it ties with one or up to three research groups in which the applicant is interested.
A complete curriculum vitae describing education and employment history,
List of publications, with pointers to openly available online versions of at most three of the most relevant publications.
Degree certificate of the PhD degree, including a transcript of the doctoral studies. In case the doctoral degree is still pending, an up-to-date study transcript and a plan for completion of the degree must be provided.

Short-listed candidates may be invited for an interview either at the Otaniemi or Kumpula campus or for an interview conducted via Skype. In the review process, particular emphasis is put on the quality of the candidate's previous research and international experience, together with the substance, innovativeness, and feasibility of the research plan, and its relevance to the research group in question. Efficient and successful completion of studies is considered an additional merit.
Should there be a lack of eligible outstanding applicants, the application period may be extended. While all applicants who have submitted an application by the deadline will be appropriately considered, the universities reserve the right to consider also other candidates for the announced position.
