Retrotope (w?ww.retrotope.com)? is a startup biotech company which has developed a series of compounds which may have profound impact across a range of neurodegenerative diseases, many of which result in motion disorders. For instance, Parkinson’s disease is typically associated with symptoms such as hand tremors and ataxic walking. Retrotope believes that its compounds will halt the progression of such symptoms in one or more diseases, and is about to begin a clinical trial in humans. Along with chemical biomarkers, data will be collected from patients during specific motion activities.
We currently have an opening for one 2015 internship, beginning August 1. We may have a very limited number of internships available for the Winter of 2016.
The commitment is for 3 to 4 months, full time. Retrotope's interns will get exposure to all aspects of our clinical research programs in ataxic disorders. Interns will be expected to spend a reasonable fraction of time in Retrotope’s Los Altos, CA offices initially. Later in the project more interactions may be network mediated.

What you can expect to learn

- The challenges of developing algorithms for multi?-limb 3D motion tracking
- Coding algorithms which extract gait-?related features from clinical patient data
- Exploring means of automatically distinguishing among healthy individuals and three diagnosed motion disorders
- Develop metrics of disease severity within a specific disorder based on motion data
- Gain experience in working with Numenta’s open source software for Hierarchical Temporal Memory
- Potential co?authorship on research publication(s)
Desired qualifications

- Experience with control systems and motion sensors
- Experience with machine learning or pattern recognition algorithms
- Excellent programming skills in either Python or MATLAB
- Enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies in CS, EE or related disciplines
- Experience with data analytics
