The Advanced Resolution Terradynamics (ARTeMiS) Lab within the Department of Geography at the University of Lethbridge is accepting applications for new graduate student, postdoctoral fellow and laboratory technician positions. Dr. Chris Hopkinson’s ARTeMiS lab is well-resourced with cutting edge Geomatics, Lidar, Imaging, Ground Penetrating Radar, and Environmental Sensing technologies through the Canada Foundation of Innovation, and currently hosts several research projects addressing applied remote sensing, environmental monitoring and change detection research needs within western Canada. Funded research opportunities are available to support one postdoctoral fellow, four M.Sc. or Ph.D. students and one part-time laboratory technician.

Start date: May 1st (or when ideal candidate is found)
Duration: Up to one year (extension possible pending budgetary approval)
FTE: 20% (2 days / week and flexible timing based on agreement with lab director)
Salary: $1,000 / month (top-up possible from additional research funds)
Position description:
This is a part-time position ideally suited to a grad student or someone with an environmental science and technical Geomatics background with two days / week to spare to assist in the management and organisation of a vibrant and growing research laboratory.
Maintain and calibrate the geomatics, survey, remote sensing, imaging and environmental monitoring systems within the lab in support of PI and grad student projects. On occasion, this will involve instruction on safe use of instruments as well as assistance with field operation and deployment in remote locations around Alberta. There is a requirement for clear and comprehensive record keeping associated with the inventory, maintenance, and operation of all equipment. This includes but is not limited to detailed written and diagrammatic reports documenting instrument modifications, malfunctions, programming changes or field installation details.
This is not a paid research position but the technician will have the opportunity to support and/or participate in a number of research projects based on their level of interest and willingness to dedicate time.
Ideal candidate skills and experiences:
? Basic knowledge of Windows PC software support and set up of network attached storage devices
? GNSS and total station survey equipment
? INS-based mobile mapping instrumentation
? Terrestrial laser scanner equipment
? Ground penetrating radar equipment
? Digital SLR hemispheric photography
? Hydrometric instrument installation and calibration
? Fluorometry and some basic water chemistry
? Installation of ground water wells and piezometers
? Campbell Scientific data logger programming for a range of sensors
? Understanding of basic field and forest mensuration techniques and data recording
? Mobile GIS
? Basic electronics and wiring skills
? Ability to work in forest and alpine forest locations
? Ability and willingness to set up and climb hydrometeorological towers
? General ability to fix ‘stuff’
? Excellent interpersonal skills. Candidate must be a team player!
