Description

PhD Student on the subject of the computer science aspects of quantum computing and quantum information theory
Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) has a vacancy in the Algorithms and Complexity research group for a talented
PhD student,
on the subject of the computer science aspects of quantum computing and quantum information theory.
Job description
This position involves research into the computer-science aspects of quantum computing and quantum information theory, supervised by Prof. Ronald de Wolf. Specifically, the project will focus on the development of new quantum algorithms and the analysis of their complexity, development of new quantum communication protocols and the role entanglement plays in such protocols, and applications of quantum techniques to problems in classical computer science and mathematics.
The position is funded by the ERC grant of Ronald de Wolf, and can start at any time after 1 November 2014.
Requirements:
Candidates are required to have a Master’s degree in the area of computer science, mathematics, or physics, with a focus on the computer-science aspects of quantum computing and quantum information theory. Other required qualifications for candidates include proven research talent, an excellent command of English, and good academic writing and presentation skills.
A plus would be if you have any prior research experience that has resulted in publications in conferences like STOC, FOCS, Complexity, ICALP, QIP and/or journals like Journal of the ACM, SIAM Journal on computing, Theory of Computing, Physical Review Letters, Quantum information & computation. But this is not a requirement.
Terms and conditions:
The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres ("CAO-onderzoeksinstellingen"). The gross monthly salary, for a PhD student on a full time basis, is ?2,057 during the first year and increases to ?2,636 over the four year period. Employees are also entitled to a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.33%. CWI offers attractive working conditions, including flexible scheduling and help with housing for expat employees.
Application & Information:
Applications can be sent to apply-AT-cwi.nl. All applications should include a detailed resume and motivation letter.

About Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica
Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) is the Dutch national research institute for mathematics and computer science and linked to the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). The mission of CWI is to conduct pioneering research in mathematics and computer science, generating new knowledge in these fields and conveying it to trade, industry, and society at large.
CWI is located at Science Park Amsterdam. It is an internationally oriented institute, with 150 scientists from approximately 25 countries. The facilities are first-rate and include excellent IT support, career planning, training, and courses.
Research group
Algorithms and Complexity forms the theoretical basis for all information processing tasks. Whenever information needs to be processed, one needs to develop procedures or algorithms that make efficient use of the available resources, e.g. running time, memory, communication, information, data, qubits, randomness etc.
Within this broad field the group currently focuses on four areas: 1) Quantum Computing, 2) Learning Theory, 3) Computational Complexity, 4) Computational Biology.
