Description

PhD Student on the subject of Spiking Neural Networks for Efficient Vision
Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI) has a vacancy in the Life Sciences research group for a talented
PhD student on the subject of Spiking Neural Networks for Efficient Vision.
Job description
A PhD student position is available to develop (deep) spiking neural networks for video interpretation. The aim of the project is to develop effective next-generation neural networks based on neural spike coding (e.g. Bohte, NIPS 2012) that efficiently implement state-of-the-art models of the visual system. While modern deep learning methods have recently achieved breakthrough performance in computer vision, for dynamical applications like video analysis, deep neural networks are exceedingly expensive to compute and learn. We aim to develop efficient and parallelized deep spiking neural networks to reduce the computational cost of time-continuous neural computation and learning, using the insights from neuroscience on how biological neurons exploit temporal dynamics and temporal correlations.
This project is funded by NWO “Natural Artificial Intelligence” and is an interdisciplinary collaboration between the Neuroinformatics group at CWI (the Netherlands Center for Mathematics and Computer Science), with dr Sander Bohte, and the Visual Cognitive Neuroscience group at University of Amsterdam (dr H. Steven Scholte and dr Sennay Ghebreab).
Requirements:
Candidates are required to have, or obtain shortly, a hard-sciences Master’s degree like computer science, mathematics, physics or electrical engineering (or an equivalent five year diploma). Preferable qualifications for candidates include a solid computational background, an interest in neural computation, proven research talent, an excellent command of English, and good programming skills.
Terms and conditions:
The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labour Agreement for Research Centres ("CAO-onderzoeksinstellingen"). The gross monthly salary, for a PhD student on a full time basis, is ?2,057 during the first year and increases to ?2,636 over the four year period. Employees are also entitled to a holiday allowance of 8% of the gross annual salary and a year-end bonus of 8.33%. CWI offers attractive working conditions, including flexible scheduling and help with housing for expat employees.
Please visit our website for more information about our terms of employment:
www.cwi.nl/terms-of-employment
Application & Information:
Applications can be sent before 1 December 2014 to apply-AT-cwi.nl. All applications should include a detailed resume, motivation letter, two references, list of your MSc courses and grades, copy of your Master’s thesis (or expected graduation date), and preferably a list of publications.
For residents outside the EER-area, a Toefl English language test might be required.
For more information about the vacancy, please contact dr Sander M. Bohte, email sbohte-AT-cwi.nl.
