The Position: The faculty of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning invites applicants for a visiting assistant professor for one year in the field of Environmental Planning. Our faculty is part of the School of Architecture and Planning, University at Buffalo, State University of New York. The appointment is expected to commence in August, 2015.
Review of applications begins immediately and continues until the position is filled. We are searching for applicants whose research and teaching interests focus on environmental Planning, in any or any combination of the following emphasis areas or related areas:
? Climate change
? Ecosystem restoration
? Environmental issues in central-city regeneration
? Land use planning
? Natural environment systems
? Sustainable development
Though the selected candidate may be given responsibilities in both graduate and undergraduate instruction, we are especially interested in candidates who may become closely involved in the Environmental and Land Use Planning specialization in the Master of Urban Planning Program.
Applicants must have or be about to complete a Ph.D. in planning or a related field. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications. The duties of a faculty member involve a combination of research, teaching (two classes per semester at the graduate or undergraduate level in the general curriculum as well as in his or her area of specialization), and service and student advising.
The faculty expects but cannot yet confirm that a tenure-track position at the assistant professor level in the same field will open up in fall 2016.
The University: With 30,000 students, the University at Buffalo is a Carnegie Class I research university and a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU). The university offers 90 Ph.D. and 135 master's programs, and has outstanding supercomputing, library, and research facilities, including numerous interdisciplinary centers and institutes for faculty collaboration.
With thirteen tenured or tenure-track faculty members, the Department of Urban and Regional Planning is one of two accredited departments in a professional school of about 700 full-time equivalent students. The Department offers five degree programs: the B.A. in Environmental Design with about 90 students; the accredited Master's of Urban Planning (M.U.P.) degree with about 90 students; joint master degrees with Architecture, Law, and soon Public Health; and a growing Ph.D. degree in Urban Planning currently with six students, the number expected to rise to at least nine by next academic year. Students at the master's level may concentrate in one of the department's six areas of specialization: Economic and International Development; Environmental and Land Use Planning; GIS and Spatial Analysis; Historic Preservation, Neighborhood Planning and Community Development; and Urban Design and Physical Planning. There is also an interdisciplinary option.
The department is expected to re-enter its nineteenth-century building-currently undergoing full renovation-on the university's historic urban campus, in late 2015. The department benefits from an on-site architecture and planning library. The School of Architecture and Planning has excellent computing facilities, with over 160 systems available to students in labs and studios.
The Community: Near our campus is the University Heights neighborhood, with a full array of commercial outlets and services, in proximity to Buffalo's many diverse neighborhoods. The campus is highly accessible, situated on a subway and other transit lines. Housing opportunities are abundant and affordable.
The U.S. Buffalo-Niagara MSA has a population of over 1 million; extended to the Greater Toronto Area, the bi-national region has population exceeding 6.5 million, and offers a high quality of life and an exceptional setting for engaging planning issues. The region spans an international border and parts of the Great Lakes, and includes large cities, varied suburbs, wilderness and waterfront areas, dramatic landscapes, and quiet villages.
