Research Assistant or Associate in Non-Destructive Defect Characterisation with Ultrasonic Arrays at University of Bristol

Country/Region : UK - United Kingdom

Website : http://www.bristol.ac.uk/hr/ftc

Description

Based in the Ultrasonics and NDT Research Group at Bristol, you will undertake internationally leading research in the area of ultrasonic arrays. Ultrasonic arrays have seen a dramatic increase in use over recent years to the point where it seems possible that non-destructive array inspections will completely replace the present industry-standard single point measurements over the course of the next decade.
You will explore novel methods to characterize defects in engineering structures using ultrasonic arrays. The approach will be to use analytical and numerical inversion. The methods developed will also be explored experimentally.
You will have a first degree in Engineering, Physics or Maths and a PhD in Acoustics, Ultrasonics, Signal Processing or related subject.
In addition, you will have analytical skills for modelling elastic (or acoustic) wave propagation and scattering in solids (or liquids) and excellent all-round modelling skills, together with an enthusiasm for modelling (i.e. the application of physics in an engineering context).
This work is part of the UK Research Centre in Non-Destructive Evaluation (RCNDE) which involves collaboration between The Universities of Bristol, Nottingham, Manchester, Warwick, Strathclyde and Imperial College. Given the collaborative nature of the project, good interpersonal skills and the ability to deal effectively with people at all levels, and with a variety of different backgrounds and perspectives are essential.
This is a full time, fixed term post for 3 years.
Interviews will take place during September 2014.
Informal enquiries can be made to: Professor Bruce Drinkwater b.drinkwater-AT-bristol.ac.uk
The successful applicant for this vacancy may be appointed either on a fixed term or an open-ended contract depending on the extent of their previous relevant research experience, in line with the University’s Fixed Term Contract Agreement.
