The School of Computing, Informatics, and Decision Systems Engineering (CIDSE) at Arizona State University is pleased to announce a new Postdoctoral Scholar Position beginning in September 2014.

In an effort to anticipate and mitigate the national security risks associated with climate change, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) has awarded Arizona State University a grant of $20 million. This five-year partnership known as the Foresight Initiative will examine how climate change affects resources and contributes to political unrest, as well as articulate sustainability and resilience strategies.
A postdoctoral scholar position will be awarded for the 2014-2015 academic year. The appointment is for full time employment (40 hours per week) for 9 months. Renewal is possible, contingent on additional funding by the sponsor and satisfactory job performance. Salary range is $55,000-$60,000 per year, depending on qualifications. The University offers subsidized health insurance. Support for travel to conferences will be available. Scholars are responsible for relocation and housing expenses. Eligibility

Applicants must have an earned doctoral degree in Computer Science or Computational Linguistics. The degree must have been earned no earlier than 2012. Candidates with pending degrees who will successfully defend their dissertations by August 1, 2014 will also be considered. Applicants must have no more than two years of formal postdoctoral experience.
The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the United States by the time of appointment.
We are seeking a motivated and hard working Post-Doc with preparation in machine learning (ML) and natural language processing (NLP) for quantitative text and discourse analysis. The project involves tracking events, public statements, strategic frames and their diffusion on social media using machine learning techniques (learning to classify and extract information from short and sparse text, evolutionary clustering in social media).
Candidates should have excellent English language skills (written and spoken), good communication skills, good programming skills (e.g., Java, C++, MATLAB, Python) and demonstrable ability to work with various open source NLP and ML tools and libraries.
